Spinal Management
Course Description
Spinal Management is a Surf Life Saving Australia registered course. It is an element of the unit PUASAR009A Participate in a Rescue Operation from the Public Safety Training Package. In this course the first aider will learn:
- Legal issues in First Aid
- Documentation
- Patient assessment
- Review of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
- The chain of survival
- Anatomy and physiology
- Immobilisation techniques
- Safety issues
- Equipment checks
- Application of a spinal collar
- Transporting the patient
- Use of a spinal board
- Management of spinal injuries
Course Outcomes
At the end of this course you should be able to:
- Display a basic understanding of spinal cord anatomy and injuries
- Describe the possible causes of spinal injuries
- Detail the signs and symptoms of a patient with suspected spinal injuries
- Demonstrate how to move a casualty with suspected spinal injuries
- Detail and demonstrate the management of head and spinal injuries
- Detail the principles of immobilization for spinal injuries
- Detail the precautions necessary for the transportation of casualties with suspected spinal injuries
Methods of Delivery and Course Duration
- Spinal Management is a four hour course comprising theory and practical training
Course Information
Minimum Age Requirement: 16 years
Pre-requisites: A current CPR certificate
On successfully completing the training, participants will obtain a Australian Lifesaving Academy of WA certificate of participation in Spinal Management.
Validity: Spinal Management Certificate is valid for 1 year from the date of completion.
