Recreational Skippers Ticket
Course Description and Outcomes
The Government of Western Australia, through the Department for Planning & Infrastructure requires anyone who operates a power-craft greater than 6hp (4.5kw) to have a Recreational Skippers Ticket (RST). The RST is a qualification based on a set of marine safety competencies that a skipper will be required to demonstrate to an authorised assessor.
Surf Lifesaving Western Australia as a peak aquatic body has been approved as an Authorised Provider of the RST. SLSWA has been educating and training the community in safe aquatic practices for almost 100 years. Our team of RST Assessors are highly skilled and DPI approved. In addition, SLSWA has the ability to provide training through external providers, operating in partnership with SLSWA.
There are three levels of entry to the RST:
- Limited Boating Skills & Knowledge
- Practical Exemption (Owned a boat for greater than 5 years)
- Prior Qualifications – Prior learning on boat driving

Course Duration
Surf Lifesaving WA offers both Theory Assessments and Practical.
Training is provided through instruction and self teaching exercises (Workbook & PowerPoint).
Course Information
Minimum Age Requirement: 14 years
Pre-requisite: Nil
On successfully completing the assessment, candidates will receive the Western Australian issued license the Recreational Skippers Ticket. This is a life-time qualification without annual registration fees.
