Spinal Management

Spinal management is a Surf Life Saving Australia award. It is an element of the unit PUASAR009A - Participate in a Rescue Operation from the Public Safety Training Package.

  • Review of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • The chain of survival
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Immobilisation techniques
  • Safety issues
  • Equipment checks
  • Application of a spinal collar
  • Transporting the casualty
  • Use of a spinal board
  • Management of spinal injuries

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Display a basic understanding of the spinal cord anatomy and injuries
  • Describe the possible courses of spinal injuries
  • Detail the signs and symptoms of a patient with suspected spinal injuries
  • Demonstrate how to move a casualty with suspected spinal injuries
  • Detail and demonstrate the management of head and spinal injuries
  • Detail the principals of immobilisation for spinal injuries
  • Detail the precautions necessary for the transportation of casualties with suspected spinal injuries

Accreditation

After successfully completing in training, participants will obtain a Surf Life Saving WA certificate of participation in Spinal Management.

Validity

Spinal Management is valid for 12 months
